The most prominent city landmark, Blue Mosque amazes visitors with its turquoise domes and elegant Persian-style tile work. Sultan Husayn Mirza built the mosque in the 15th century on a spot once occupied by an earlier shrine, and, according to Afghan legend, on the site where Mohamed's son-in-law Ali was buried. The sanctity of the place is measured by thousands of white doves that nest in the lush garden surrounding the mosque. Locals believe that all doves--even those with colored spots--turn white if they stay near the mosque. Another legend has it that Zoroaster also lies buried here.
