Fannie Bay Gaol, Darwin

#40 of 218 in Things to do in Darwin
Fannie Bay Gaol provides a sober, but fascinating look at the history of the penal system in the Northwest Territory. Opened in 1883 and running until 1979, this prison housed some notable Australian inmates. See the gallows used in 1952 to hang Jerry Coci and Jonus Novotny, Czechoslovakian immigrants who were the last prisoners that the Australian government executed. Tour the segregated cell blocks for female prisoners and for Aboriginal ones. Stay clear of aggressive nesting birds if you visit in December. • Gold coin donation to get in which is nothing, helps towards current reno. Great piece of NT history. Helpful guy at front to give you a rundown on the place. Cells would have looked good if set up like they were in the day.. like Alcatraz.
  • What an amazing piece of NT history. Take your time to wander around and "feel" the atmosphere
