Originally built in 1705 as the residence of a former Montreal governor, Chateau Ramezay Historic Site and Museum of Montreal now stands as a historic building and educational museum. The building has offered refuge to important figures in volatile times, including the Continental Army when Montreal was seized, and Benjamin Franklin as he endeavored to raise troops in the American Revolutionary War. As the area's oldest private history museum, and a National Historic Site, it is no surprise the structure has filled with thousands of vintage items. Browse through about 30,000 objects, including manuscripts, artworks, and furniture dating up to the 20th century. Take the time to explore the garden, a wonderful display of 18th century landscaping. I was rather saddened that the ground floor level of Château Ramezay had received such a complete makeover inside that it was left with none of its historical character or charm. The basement and cellar was quite a bit better, but it wouldn't be a museum I would either recommend or visit again. The outside and gardens however are lovely.

There is much more history given per sq ft than we expected Audio & visual presentations we're very easy to use and contained bits of humor. Very moving WW1 Flowers exhibit. Well worth the time & cost. Staff extremely nice as well as knowledgeable.
