Lama Temple (Yonghegong), Beijing

4.6
#2 of 118 in Museums in Beijing
Constructed with a combination of Tibetan and Han Chinese styles, Lama Temple (Yonghegong) represents a Buddhist monastery and the best-preserved lamasery in modern China. Built in 1694, the site initially served as a residence for court eunuchs, but was later converted into both an imperial palace and a monastery for monks of Tibetan Buddhism. Inside you can find many interesting works of art, such as three displayed bronze Buddhas, a white sandalwood statue of Maitreya Buddha, sculptures of Arhats in different sizes and positions, and large frescos decorating the walls. You can also purchase many souvenirs and quality incenses at the temple. • Beautiful temple complex that used to be the home of a prince and former emperor. The architecture and layout of this place is incredible, the giant sandalwood carved Buddha is particularly impressive, and the history is amazing. They must go through a ton of incense here every day, but it makes for a really cool scene. The crowds are small compared to a lot of other famous attractions in Beijing, and the tickets are reasonably priced (40 rmb if I recall). The propaganda about China and its positive relationship with the people of Tibet and China's territorial claims to Tibet are a bit overboard, but it doesn't detract from how great this place is. One of my favorite spots in Beijing which I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone
  • Outside of Tibet this is probably one of the most important of the Tibetan Buddhist temples. It is well worth seen and is easily access via the subway. Entrance price is not very expensive. Make sure you pick up the incense on your way in which they give you for free. Then you will have multiple opportunities to join the people who are burning incense at the various devotional sites in the temple. The giant carved sandalwood Buddhist statue is really amazing!
