Latacunga

4.1

Mashca City

Established in 1534, the plateau town of Latacunga was destroyed four times by earthquakes between 1698 and 1798. Having gained independence from Spain in 1820, the nearly 100,000 inhabitants of the modern town continue to live in the shadow of the active volcano, Cotopaxi. Though the region's topographical features have presented plenty of difficulties, they also form the basis of tourism in Latacunga, with hiking and exploration high on the itineraries of those who visit. The town itself, with a significant proportion of indigenous inhabitants, offers plenty of rustic restaurants serving popular local dishes, such as tostado, popcorn, empanadas, and chugchucaras. Latacunga is in Cotopaxi Province. Use our custom trip planner: Latacunga and all its delights await.
