Basilica del Voto Nacional, Quito

4.7
Reminiscent of some of Europe's finest cathedrals, Basilica del Voto Nacional stands as one of the city's most prominent landmarks. This imposing Neo-Gothic church boasts dual towers climbing to a height of 115 m (377 ft). Though begun in 1892, the church did not receive consecration until 1988, and technically remains unfinished. Enter the historical building to marvel at its cavernous sanctuary, wandering through the aisles to take in the bronze images, stained glass windows, and other decorations. Try steeling yourself to climb up the towers' internal staircase--you'll be rewarded with both a lofty vantage point to the church's interior and a sweeping view of the surrounding historical city on the outside. Don't miss the church's defining feature: instead of traditional gargoyles, it's decked with carvings of sharks, penguins, iguanas, monkeys, and other native species. • Do you want to visit and pray - you have to pay! The catholic churches are so "poor" that they need more funds.  more »
  • We used this tremendous Basilica as a landmark while walking to Old Town from our Mariscal neighborhood. I was stunned by the enormity of the building as we approached via the park in the front. $3...  more »

  • It looks like a church from the medieval time, but it’s just around 100 years old. I was surprised we could climb to such high risk places without supervision. This would not be allowed in the US. I think the place is beautiful, but compared to Prague it’s not that grand. Go down the street to the baroque church for a completely different experience. Buy your tickets early if you want to climb because the will sell the tickets and not allow it.
  • This was my favorite place in Quito. The Basílica is beautiful both inside and out. I loved climbing up and down each tower. The views are absolutely stunning. There’s also a cafe in one of the towers, so be sure to enjoy a coffee, beer, or wine.
