Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco, Quito

4.7
Gape in wonder at the dazzling gold and ornate carvings adorning the interior of Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco. A crowning jewel of the central square, the church has stood for almost as long as Quito itself--construction started just weeks after the city was founded in 1534. Despite significant damage from earthquakes, the church's commanding facade and glorious interior remain in top condition thanks to tireless restoration work. Check out the attached courtyard, which features a ring of palm trees among its manicured gardens. • We visited as part of a tour excursion. So glad we did. The gold work is incredible. There is a lot of history here and we thoroughly enjoyed the stop.  more »
  • Completed in the 1600, this is the largest colonial styled Church in Latin America. The interior especially the ceiling is stunning. And it houses the Virgin of Quito.  more »

  • Our tour stop at this convent was incredible. T As you walk the street, admiring the beauty of the architecture, and up through the beautiful Church doors be ready for jaw dropping history. You will be amazed at the beauty of all the Real Gold laced architecture and artwork. This will make you appreciate things just a bit more as here in America this would probably have been vandalized with all the Gold and value stripped. For it to stand the test of time is a miracle and testament of the culture differences from America. Hit the LIKE BUTTON for me!!!
