Church of the Holy Ghost (Heiliggeistkirche), Heidelberg

#3 of 19 in Historic Sites in Heidelberg
In Heidelberg's central Marktplatz, Church of the Holy Ghost (Heiliggeistkirche) is one of the few buildings to survive centuries of war unscathed. Foundations were laid for the great structure in 1398 on the site of a late Romanesque basilica, but the church and its large tower were not complete until 1544. Throughout its history, both Catholics and Protestants have used the church; at one point, a partition divided the hall for the two denominations. Climb the steep tower stairs for a spectacular view of Heidelberg and the castle. • It is the biggest and one of the oldest protestant churches in the world. The optical illusion it gives is amazing. The Roman architecture in it is worth seeing
  • A Bright Church we were fortunate to listen to an Organ and Choir practise. A lovely break in a busy day....
