Godafoss, Akureyri

4.8
Also known as "The Fall of the Gods," Godafoss represents a magnificent horseshoe-shaped waterfall and a favorite of many tourists. The waterfall represents the point in time where the Heathens of Iceland made the choice to convert to Christianity and allegedly threw all their idols over the falls. Spanning a width of 30 m (98 ft) and reaching 12 m (39 ft) high, this natural masterpiece is worth spending a few minutes on. Check out the gift shop where traditional Icelandic wool items are reasonably priced. Use our Akureyri itinerary planner to add Godafoss and other attractions to your Akureyri vacation plans.

  • We saw over ten and this was one of my favorites from our trip. Definitely worth a visit, it will put others to shame!  more »
  • So Named because it tells the legend that back in the year 1000, the king threw the pagan gods as a symbol of their conversion to Christianity. Beautiful cascade of easy hike to get to it. To enjoy it at ease in half an hour. We were lucky to see it with Rainbow included. Of the best in the area.

  • My favourite waterfall during the entire Iceland roadtrip. Also the weather happened to be spot on. Simply breathtaking. Parking area (with lots of space) is located nearby (a few hundred meter walk).
  • Beautiful place but very very crowded. Make sure you come to this place early on the morning or at the evening, to get some private spots. Otherwise, one of the most magnificent waterfalls in Iceland for sure.
