Hversdagssafn - Museum of Everyday Life, Isafjordur

Skóbúðin er staðsett í Hafnarstræti 5. Á safninu vinnum við með sögur, minningar, tilfinningar og tengsl. Við setjum upp sýningar sem eru byggðar á persónulegum heimildum frá íbúum sem búa eða hafa búið á svæðinu. Við reynum að finna augnablikin sem lýsa upplifunum og gefa innsýn. Það sem gerist í hversdeginum er oft mjög lýsandi fyrir mannlífið, en hann er líka svo heillandi því hann er einmitt eitthvað sem við virðumst tengja við, sama hvaðan við erum.

The old shoe-shop, known to locals as Skóbúðin is a unique spot in the center of Ísafjörður.

We have a collection of local stories, memory fragments, sound installations and visuals that give insight to the everyday life of people in the area of the Westfjords of Iceland.

We also have a carefully selected souvenir and gift shop where you can find hand-crafted items all made by local artists and designers.

  • Anyone travelling through Ísafjörđur should definitely consider spending an hour or two in this wonderful museum. Very touching in its simplicity. Even after visiting the museums of the capital, I would still easily call this my favourite museum. Personal stories, stored in a beautifully crafted time capsule. Untainted everyday life, not commercialised and honest. I especially enjoyed reading about the experiences and challenges of people immigrating to Iceland and making a new home there. I had a great conversation with the super friendly people running the museum. The short movies were also very impressive. Definitely check it out!
  • Besides all the out of this world nature I saw on my trip to Iceland one of my favorite highlights was this little museum. It explores narrative through the experiences of the mundane and routine of people living in the westfjords and the difficulty of surviving the very harsh winters but goes beyond that. Varied between humorous, soulful, and heartfelt and gives you an inside look into the lives of other people. Kinda like humans of new york or the strangers project but focused on locals/expats in the westfjords. We were there on a sunday when they usually aren’t open but I emailed them to see if they could open up for us just for one hour and Björg one of the two curators of the museum emailed me back and told me she would happily meet me there in one hour. She took the time in explaining some things about the museum while we were there, answered some questions we had, and even interviewed us before we left. It was a lovely experience and some of the stories I read I will probably never forget like mother potato’s children sucking the life out from her. Don’t miss going here if you are in isafjorour!
