Bru na Boinne, Donore

Older than the Egyptian pyramids, Bru na Boinne serves as the largest Neolithic archeological complex in Europe, designated as a World Heritage Site. Situated around a wide bend of the Boyne River, this 5,000-year-old site includes mounds, chamber tombs, standing stones, and henges, encompassing about 800 hectares (2,000 acres). The site's star attractions are three passage graves built with an impressive knowledge of science and astronomy and containing significant collections of megalithic art. You can access these tombs by guided tour only, available at the visitor center in the nearby town of Donore. The complex receives only 650 people each day, so arrive at the center as early as possible to ensure your place on the tour. • Visitor Center in works = free visit. But this area of explanation is missing a little before going on the Neolithic sites classified as world heritage of UNESCO. Especially for non-English speakers because the guide speaks only the language of Shakespeare. That being so, it remains a monument of history and symbols that still resonate today.

  • The Visitor Centre is under refurbishment but the tour is still very much worth it. It is currently free but would definitely have paid for this experience. To be inside a 5000 year old structure is j...  more »

  • Excellent visit! It is a great opportunity to be in contact and learn a lot about Irish ancients. Highly recommended for everyone who enjoys history and entertaining and would like to know more about Irish history.
  • Breathtaking look back into the past, as this is one of the oldest archaeological sites in the world. You are able to go into the actual tomb during the guided tour, however photos inside are not allowed. The staff were amazingly kind and helpful. There is a small bus ride from the entrance out to the site.
