With its gardens, impressive walls, and carefully considered architectural features, Kanazawa Castle tells the story of the "daimyo" (regional lords) who lived in and ruled from its grounds. The castle complex features a stone watchtower, a massive warehouse, an ornate gate, and expansive landscaped gardens. Look up to see the castle's whitish roof tiles, which are made of lead and were allegedly melted into bullets in times of siege. Placards and signposts scattered around the grounds offer viewers more information in English and Japanese. Shoes out and walk around only it is empty. Beautiful construction but nothing else. Don't slip out with your socks on the steep stairs. We could have seen it in 30 minutes. You follow a compulsory route.
The castle was rebuilt a few years ago using traditional techniques as it is made entirely of wood and burnt down. The main building is massive and the grounds are also well worth strolling through. Y... more »
This place is magnificent. There's so much to see, we spent 3 hours and we could have spent 5 or 6 easily. This doesn't include the garden. You can learn so much from the self guided tours you can take through many of the main buildings. There are many brief but informative plaques with information on them located at the various places. If you're disabled you can still see pretty much everything, they have wheelchair facilities. I would definitely recommend going here. An easy 5 out of 5.
Kanazawa Castle is accessable from Kenrokuen Garden via a bridge. It's really impressive and exciting. I didn't go inside the castle building as it was out of my budget range (next time) but still the exterior and the grounds are a sight to see.
