Step back in time into Gion, a neighborhood in Kyoto that dates back to the Middle Ages. At the foot of the Yasaka shrine, locals developed this area to provide services to shrine visitors. Today, the neighborhood remains characterized by its wooden "machiya" merchant houses and cascading willow trees. Walk along the scenic Shirakawa canal and stop at a high-end restaurant, or visit an "ochaya" (tea house), where geishas, known locally as geikos, serve and perform for visitors. By using our Kyoto tour itinerary planning site, you can arrange your visit to Gion and other attractions in Kyoto.

I think this the place that best describes the old Japan. Ambience at night gives a serene vibe as you walk along the alleys. Very nice place. There are a lot of shops and restaurants too.

Gion, a must see in Kyoto. Many buildings are being redecorated, so the overall atmosphere is a bit spoiled. Nice to see many girls wearing traditional kimonos and, if you are lucky, you can meet a real geisha
