Irabu Ohashi, Miyakojima

4.6
Cross the ocean on Irabu Ohashi, a bridge connecting the islands of Miyako and Irabu. Measuring 3,540 m (11,610 ft), the structure stands as one of the longest bridges in the world, and its island-hopping span has been impressively engineered, with construction starting in 2006 and taking nine years to complete. More convenient for locals than the ferries that used to cross the divide between the islands, the bridge still allows tourists to soak in the views at a pleasant pace. Speed limits on the bridge remain restricted, making it easier to admire the ocean, islands, and the bridge itself without holding up traffic. A viewing platform in the center provides a good place to snap some photos. A visit to Irabu Ohashi represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Miyakojima trip builder app to plot your vacation.

  • I've been there in the afternoon and in the morning, but the scenery in the morning is by far the best! The color of the sea seen in the position of the sun is completely different. It's really beautiful! In the middle of the bridge, I tried to take a picture of the wonderful scenery, but the size and beauty of the scale were not conveyed by the small image of the photo. By all means, please be caught in the eye. It's great that such a big bridge is free!

  • Our group of 6 people pack the ancient city, The Yiliang Department is a must go, today's day is good, the sky white, first look at the big day, and then to the location engraved with the name of the Yiliang Department to take pictures, sea sky color, good beautiful.

  • Tremendous beautiful achievement of engineering. Breathtaking views, great for sunset.Along bridge there are three small spots to park a car for while.
  • It's a long unusual and pretty cool looking bridge! There's lay-bys on both sides near the highest point for tourist viewing and those all-too-common selfie stick pics and totally rideable on a cycle (there's cycle lanes). Fascinating to see drivers just STOP right in the road to take a photo from their driving seat, whilst simultaneously bringing traffic to an abrupt halt. Just because in Japan you can do that! Most amazingly, no one stuck in the cars behind honks their horn, including the ambulance which was stuck right behind this lady... Funnier still, she had a full car and could have asked the passenger to take it instead... #differentculture
