  • This was the main point of my visit - I joined a local tour, and the tour guide was very knowledgeable, taking us through the woods and explaining the route / trees / animals that lived in the park. U...  more »
  • Soon after becoming a World heritage site, tourists pouring at once, but this place seems to be not so many. Rausu is not a tourist attraction compared to Utoro, and the feeling of stopping is amazing. I like Rausu. It looks close to Kunago Island.

  • 素晴らしかったね。 Loved this wild, protected park on a peninsula. 'Five Lakes' is beautiful to walk around and there is plenty of wildlife to see, but my favorite experience was relaxing in a warm river called Kamuiwakka カムイワッカ. Great memories !
  • One of the most remote regions in Japan, much of the peninsula is only accessible on foot or by boat. Shiretoko is best known as the home of Japan's largest brown bear population and for offering views of Kunashiri Island, ownership of which Japan and Russia dispute. The park has a hot springs waterfallcalled Kamuiwakka Falls (カムイワッカの滝Kamuiwakka-no-taki). Kamui wakka means "water of the gods" in Ainu. The forests of the park are temperate and subalpinemixed forests; the main tree species include Sakhalin fir (Abies sachalinensis), Erman's birch (Betula ermanii) and Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica). Beyond the forest limit there are impenetrable Siberian dwarf pine (Pinus pumila) thickets. In 2005, UNESCO designated the area a World Heritage Site, advising to develop the property jointly with the Kuril Islands of Russia as a transboundary "World Heritage Peace Park".
