Kyu Iwasakitei Teien, Taito

Observe unique combinations of Western-styled architecture and picturesque Japanese gardens at Kyu Iwasakitei Teien. Constructed by the founder of Mitsubishi's son, the property was seized after World War II; since then, it has lost most of its buildings, and now stands at half its original size. Don't let this put you off, however: the remaining historical structures, unusual in their composition, make the visit worthwhile. Inspect a heady combination of 17th-century Jacobean design and Islamic Renaissance patterns in the main house--a building also circumnavigated by a veranda, and furnished with a colonnade straight out of Appalachian America. Pause for some green tea, served inside the house, and take in your surroundings. Kyu Iwasakitei Teien is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Tokyo Edition.

  • The iwasaki family's mansion was built in the Meiji era. The design is the same Josia Condor as The Kanokan. It's a fine mansion, but just because it's built in Japan like the West doesn't really feel original. However, I think that it is a building like the Meiji era which was desperate to catch up with the West. More than half of the scaffolding is underway until December, so if you want to see the whole thing, we recommend that you go after the beginning of the year.

  • On my holiday, I went to see the Tadao Ando Exhibition, the National Museum of Contemporary Architecture. On weekdays, you can enter directly, but on holidays you can not enter unless you go through the old Iwasaki House Garden. It was the height of the exterior construction. In addition, I think that 400 yen feels high, such as plywood is paved on the terrace floor. However, 60 years of age and older are free of charge (per person with one companion) ! You had better bring your driver's license.
