上野動物園のすぐ近くにある、レトロな銭湯です。お湯がすごく熱く、疲れに効きます。地元のお馴染みさんが多く、ここだけのルールもあるようなので、マナーには注意が必要です。 more »This is a retro public bath house right next to Ueno Zoo. The hot water is very hot and works for tiredness. There are a lot of familiar people of the local, and there seems to be a rule only here, so it is necessary to pay attention to manners.
Totally worth it. We travelled across Tokyo to visit this onsen. We spent 1 hr covering all our tattoos with cover skins, but once we were there a friendly old naked local man told us tattoos are no problem, told us to scrub off the cover skins before we entered the onsen! Very nice old patrons. Super friendly if you act respectfully. The hottest water ive ever touched and very plesant natural mineral smell. Not a large place, so prepare to get cosy with other bathers. Would totally get naked with strangers again at this onsen. Please respect onsen etiquette because not all onsen are as welcoming to tattooed people, so don't ruin it.
I was nervous to go to the public baths on my own as a white girl with no Japanese language skills, but I am so glad that I powered through and did it! It was great. The women were so nice to me - the lady at the desk took me into the changing room and explained to me (in Japanese) what I needed to do, and a couple of the older clientele helpfully pitched in when I looked a bit lost. It's a little intimidating but so worth it. It cost ¥460 for entry and ¥80 for the towel (about £4.50 total), I spent just over an hour bathing and soaking, and my body felt incredible afterward. There is a locker with key for your things, and they have towels and shampoo and soap, so you can rock up wearing anything and you're good to go. There is a toilet - I recommend using it before entering bathing room. You do have to do this completely naked. All old women when I was there. A very relaxed vibe. Google tips on using a Japanese onsen before you go. And go! It's wonderful.
