Visit Takayama Jinya, the only surviving "Jinya," a government office during the Edo period. The structure was built in the late 17th century to be used by officials from Edo to govern the Hida region around Takayama. Reconstructed in 1816 and used as a public office building until 1969, it's the only building of its type that remains in Japan. Step inside to explore the chambers, evocative of the Japanese lifestyle of the period. Wander through the workspaces, kitchens, and meeting rooms, or hang out in the peaceful courtyard. If you are in Takayama already, it will be good to visit this place. It is location no. 19 on tourist map. Outside look like general temple we saw but it was an old government place for government staff to stay when they travelled to this town. There is small admission fee but High school students are free. The Jinya morning market (one of the 2 morning market in Takayama) is just right in front of this location as well. Many local products, fruits, food handmade bags, etc are sold with local and good price.
I really enjoyed the experience of visiting this place, very interesting to see the traditional architecture and the garden is really beautiful. There are some English translations, so you will be able to understand the majority of the explanations.
