Shinobazu Pond, Uenokoen

3.7
#3 of 28 in Nature in Tokyo
Enjoy a boat ride and see more than 20 species of lotuses in Shinobazu Pond, a natural pond with a circumference of 2 km (1.4 mi). Having changed form several times through the ages, today the pond features three distinct areas, each with a specific feature. At Lotus Pond, snap pictures of the thick covering of peaceful plants covering the surface. Rent a rowboat or swan boat for a spin around Boat Pond. Cormorant Pond, which borders a zoo, is a habitat for many water birds, such as tufted ducks, pochards, and northern pintails. Take a walk over the bridge and visit the island with a temple that lies at the center of the lake. Make Shinobazu Pond a part of your Tokyo vacation plans using our Tokyo online trip maker.

  • The lake is beautiful. Full of massive fish and numerous aquatic birds. The walk around is lovely and the paddle boats are an awesome way to see everything from another perspective. There are wonderful food stalls near the Bentendo temple that I absolutely recommend. So close to museums, art galleries and the zoo. A peaceful place to spend some time, especially with little ones.
  • You gotta see the sunset here at Winter. By happenstance we arrived just before dusk and saw the full golden beauty of the Winter pond. Perfection.
