Oya Stone Museum, Utsunomiya

Anyone with an interest in geology or engineering will be enthralled by the carved, angular faces of the mines at Oya Stone Museum. Fairly modest in size, the museum manages to offer a wealth of information regarding the mining operations done here--from primitive 17th-century toils to the current advanced technological pursuits of the rare Oya stone, found only in this area. From here you'll have the opportunity to venture into the vast mine, colorfully lit and covering an enormous 20,000 sq m (215,278 sq ft). Bring a jacket along with you, as it can get a little chilly inside that gigantic cavern. • I went on a power spot tour. The site of the quarry in the basement was cool and comfortable because it was a day when the temperature was high. It's a fantastic space, and if you had a guide's explanation, you might have changed your perspective more. I listened to the other guide's story. I saw the corner and the stone stage that were exhibited, such as the movie and the live performance, but there were a lot of restrictions on entry, too. It might have been good to go to the quarry ruins by looking at the museum first.

  • It was cold!! I look at the small museum and get cold from the stone stairs. However, a wonderful world away from reality was spreading! I booked a plan with gelato or drink in advance for ¥1,300. Admission fee 850, gelato is double 500, so it's a little cheaper with a coupon! Gelato is also single. It was also used as a shooting scene, and it was mysterious! I want to go again! (^^)

  • Very interesting former stone mine, now converted into an event hall/ filming location/ wedding cathedral. The illuminations underground are stunning. A quaint not very well-known tourist attraction in Utsunomiya.
  • A place to learn how stones are created. The cave experience was great together with the lighting effects. You are able to see and wonder how they did it. Worth the trip.
