Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola

Ruin Monument Must See
Venture into one of the very few accessible underground prehistoric structures in the world at Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. The elaborate system of subterranean chambers dates back to around 3,000 BCE and is on the World Heritage List. The site was presumably once an underground sanctuary that later turned into a necropolis. See the distinctive architecture and red ochre paintings on the walls. The site includes a visitor center that offers multimedia presentations and information about the structure and the lost civilization that built it. Due to its layout, the necropolis is not wheelchair accessible and people who suffer from claustrophobia might feel uncomfortable inside the chambers. Make a reservation online in advance, as the site is popular and space is limited. Make Hal Saflieni Hypogeum a part of your Paola vacation plans using our Paola trip itinerary planning website .

  • If You get a chance to get tickets to the Hypogeum month’s before your trip to Malta, please be sure to do so. This tour is so very cool. It starts with two films with the history of this below ground...  more »
  • It is expensive and you have to book months in advance but it was worth the money and the wait. Amazing to see how the rocks were cut out so many thousands of years ago. Well looked after. Great tour.  more »

  • I'm ashamed that before coming to Malta I didn't know such a place exists! From 7000 years ago, amazing architectural handmade chambers under the ground where it is impossible to believe such a heritage exist. You have to book months in advance as yours are limited to maximum 80 people per day. No photography is allowed down in chambers. Breathtaking history of human beings can be seen with every step that you descend.
  • I managed to get some tickets for this site (10 days before) and I am glad I did. They only allowed 80 people a day (10 pax per time slot) so it is recommended to book well in advance. It was totally worth it. You get to see an underground necropolis built 5000 years ago and well-preserved. Do not hesitate to book it.
