Trip Planner: South America / Peru / Cusco Region / Sacred Valley / Machu Picchu / Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu
Explore the ruins of Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Incan community perched 2,430 m (7,970 ft) above sea level, on a mountain ridge overlooking the Sacred Valley. The partially restored site, built in the typical Incan style of polished dry-stone walls, spreads across multiple man-made terraces. Climb the path that extends above the complex to view the tiered ruins from above, and enjoy commanding views of the spectacular scenery that surrounds it. Built around 1450, possibly as an estate for the Incan emperor Pachacuti, the site was abandoned only a century later during the Spanish conquest. Incredibly, the Spanish conquistadors never learned of the site's existence, and it remained unknown to the wider world until 1911. In 2007, an online poll voted the now renowned site one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. There's so much mystery, so much energy, it's hard to explain or describe. You've got to go. Ruins that until today are not known as were made, way of living of the Incas and Peoples, worship to the mountains and the sun. All very beautiful and amazing. Of course, it will yield a better picture than the other, but being there is surprising. Tip: Hire a guide. Just go and admire is worth it, but only a guide will explain all the details unimaginable. If it is from Cusco, the route is made by van, train and bus, in sequence. The trip starts early, about 4 a.m., but it'll all be worth it when you get there, believe me. Obs. Some hotels have breakfast very early, another, who do not have, usually prepare a snack for the guests to take.
Really awesome experience if you want to do the cave tour on Wayna Pichu book the earliest time slot it closes early. more »
