Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Central Portugal / Lisbon District / Lisbon / Carmo Archaeological Museum
See ruins of Carmo Archaeological Museum, Lisbon's only church built almost entirely in Gothic style, which was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. Today the site serves as an archaeological museum. Completed in 1423, the church was said to be the most lavish and imposing in the city at the time. Today you can tour the interior to see its remains and visit exhibits of various artifacts, architectural adornments, and noteworthy excavated items. View tombs of notable persons, such as King Ferdinand I, and see statues, Spanish-Moorish tiles, findings from the Roman and Visigoth periods, and relics dating back to 3500 BCE. Museo-Lapidario assolutamente unico in un convento ormai scoperchiato e che , oltre al valore del luogo, offre una vera ricchezza di opere soprattutto in pietra. We were able to attend the event of projections and it was really amazing, which does not diminish the beauty of the place to the natural! It is very worth to be seen and known!!
Loved this place. Quite a traditional museum (no interactive stuff, probably not for the kids) but lots of fascinating stuff. The mummies alone justify the entry, but I particularly liked the carving of the alchemist in his study.
A visit is totally worth it! What a beautiful place with such great historical value. Go here when you visit Lisbon.
