Vall de Nuria, a valley opening south out of the Pyrenees, earns its name from the legend of St. Giles, who lived here around 700 CE. When a Roman persecution against Christians forced him out of his hermitage, he hid a painting of the Virgin Mary in a cave. After being found by a pilgrim in the 11th century, it became a symbol of fertility for the valley's shepherds. You can reach the valley via scenic rail from the south--take the train through a deep gorge up into the mountains, and then catch the gondola if you'd like to go even higher. In summer, hike through the verdant evergreen forests and grassy meadows, past a placid lake. In winter, enjoy skiing on 10 runs of varying levels. The ski area is served by multiple lifts and the gondola that runs year-round. The valley is about two hours outside of Barcelona by train. Magic place, with great views, good for hiking
The Perfect place to stay in both winter and summer! Pure Mountain air, Crystal Lake! You can't get to The Valley by car. Climb the "toothed Train" from the town of Ribes de Freser or Queralbs (parking can be found free of charge, but you may need to walk to the station). You can also climb on foot, travel time about 4 hours along the river, waterfalls in the contemplation of the beautiful nature! The Cost of the train is about 25 euros per person back and forth! Children are cheaper, up to 3 years free. In The valley there is a hotel, hostel, restaurant, café, shop. In Winter it is one of the closest ski mini-resorts to the Costa Brava coast. There is a rental of winter equipment, the lifts work upstairs, instructors work, there is a children's winter zone with rental of any kind. In Summer it is a great place for weekend, with boat hire, outdoor and free mini zoo with pets, horseback riding! Beautiful views, recommend to visit!!!
