A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.
On the 1st (Sun), take in the spiritual surroundings of Trappist Monasteries, thenexplore the activities along Onuma Lake, thenappreciate the extensive heritage of Onuma Park Walking Path, and finally stop by Hakodate Tsutaya Books. On your second day here, take in the awesome beauty at Mount Hakodate, thenadmire the landmark architecture of Kyu Soma-tei, thenenjoy breathtaking views from Goryokaku Tower, and finally take an in-depth tour of Hakodate City Northern Pacific Fishery's Document Museum.

Perhaps the island's best-known hot spring resort, Noboribetsu has a long history of tourism.
Start off your visit on the 3rd (Tue): explore the striking landscape at Jigokudani, take in the natural beauty of Oyunuma, thentake in the natural beauty of Oyunumagawa Natural Footbath, and finally relax and rejuvenate at some of the best spas.

Getting from Hakodate to Noboribetsu by train takes about 3 hours. Other options: drive. In December, plan for daily highs up to °C, and evening lows to °C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Tue) so you can go by car to Furano.

Situated in the center of the island, Furano has become known for its idyllic rural landscape, and the drastic changes it experiences as seasons shift.
On the 4th (Wed), get outside with Furano Ski Resort, stop by Campana Rokkatei, and then see the interesting displays at Kita no Kunikara Museum.

Traveling by car from Noboribetsu to Furano takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of train and bus. Traveling from Noboribetsu in December, expect Furano to be slightly colder, temps between °C and °C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Shari-cho.

Tourism in Shari-cho, a small town situated on Hokkaido's eastern tip, flourishes mainly because of its immediate proximity to the Shiretoko World Heritage Site.
On the 5th (Thu), look for all kinds of wild species at Wildlife Areas and then take in the dramatic scenery at Kamuiwakka Hot Waterfall. Keep things going the next day: cruise along Road to Heaven, thenkick back and relax at Shiretoko Beach, and then identify plant and animal life at Shiretoko Peninsula.
