Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
Visiting Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and The Brisbane River will get you outdoors. Old St Stephen's Catholic Church (Pugin Chapel) and Boggo Road Gaol (Jail) will appeal to history buffs. Venture out of the city with trips to The Workshops Rail Museum (in Ipswich) and Caboolture (Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology & Caboolture Historical Village). The adventure continues: examine the collection at Opal Museum, get in on the family fun at Wheel of Brisbane, admire the masterpieces at Queensland Art Gallery, and get great views at Mount Coot-tha Lookout.

The smallest of Australia’s state capitals, Darwin has nevertheless become an attractive and important urban center, being simultaneously one of the country’s most modernized cities and a gateway to both the Top End region and South East Asia.

Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Darwin: Litchfield National Park (Wangi Falls & Magnetic Termite Mounds), Territory Wildlife Park (in Berry Springs) and Adelaide River War Cemetery (in Adelaide River). Spend the 19th (Fri) on the water with a fishing tour. Spend the 16th (Tue) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. And it doesn't end there: identify plant and animal life at East Point Reserve, explore and take pictures at Batchelor Butterfly Farm and Pet Garden, see the world from above with a helicopter tour, and examine the collection at 1934 Qantas Hangar.
