Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Your day-by-day itinerary now includes Shimokitazawa, Nezu Shrine and Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street. Get a sense of the local culture at Sensō-ji and Tokyo National Museum. There's much more to do: take a stroll through Asakusa, admire the striking features of Tokyo Tower, and don't miss a visit to Meiji Jingu Shrine.

Yokosuka to Tokyo is an approximately 1.5-hour car ride. You can also take a train; or do a combination of train and bus. When traveling from Yokosuka in August, plan for a bit warmer days and about the same nights in Tokyo: temperatures range from 88°F by day to 76°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Sat) to allow enough time to take a train to Izu.

Izu sits in the center of the mountainous Izu Peninsula.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Izu in 2 hours. Another option is to drive. In August, plan for daily highs up to 84°F, and evening lows to 79°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 13th (Tue) so you can catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get a sense of the local culture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji. And it doesn't end there: wander the streets of Gion, stop by Fuuka-Kimono, don't miss a visit to Arashiyama, and contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Take a train from Izu to Kyoto in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and flight. Expect somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Izu in August: highs in Kyoto hover around 92°F, while lows dip to 77°F. On the 17th (Sat), you'll have the morning to explore before heading off to Hiroshima.
