The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Dotombori District and Fuuka-Kimono. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center, Nara Park, &more). And it doesn't end there: explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, get engrossed in the history at Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design, contemplate the long history of Osaka Castle, and don't miss a visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

You can take a train from Hiroshima to Kyoto in 2.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. August in Kyoto sees daily highs of °F and lows of °F at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 16th (Fri) early enough to catch the train to Numazu.
