The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Head to Dotonbori and Nishiki Market Shopping Districtfor some retail therapy. Go for a jaunt from Kyoto to Nara to see Nara Park about 1h 10 min away. The adventure continues: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, take a stroll through Gion, steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, and look for all kinds of wild species at Yodoryokuchi Park.

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
On the 12th (Sun), take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Takamikura and then steep yourself in history at Yoneda Taishiji Temple. On the 13th (Mon), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: make a trip to Himeji Castle and then hike along Mt Shosha hiking.

Take a train from Kyoto to Himeji in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In January, daily temperatures in Himeji can reach 48°F, while at night they dip to 38°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 13th (Mon) so you can catch the train to Hatsukaichi.

The city of Hatsukaichi developed from a small market town, frequented by passing samurais during the Edo period.
On the 14th (Tue), contemplate the long history of Itsukushima Shrine, then step off the mainland to explore Miyajima, and then look for gifts at Itsukushima Gekijyo. Keep things going the next day: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Daishoin Temple, then delve into the lush surroundings at Misen Wild Woods, then take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Misen, and finally head outdoors with Paddle Park.

Getting from Himeji to Hatsukaichi by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive. In January, daytime highs in Hatsukaichi are 49°F, while nighttime lows are 36°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Wed) so you can travel to Fujinomiya.

Sitting on the southwest slopes of Mount Fuji, Fujinomiya makes a popular starting point for climbing trips to the famous mountain's summit.
Kick off your visit on the 16th (Thu): take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Ryugatake and then get impressive views of Mount Fuji. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take a memorable tour with Tours, get outside with Fujigawa Service Area - Inbound, and then stop by Tago no Tsuki Honten.

Kick off your visit on the 18th (Sat): get outside with Shigakogen Yakebitaiyama Ski Area and then hit the slopes at Ichinose Diamond Ski Resort.
