The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Do your shopping at Dotombori District and Naniwa Meibutsu Ichibirian Dotombori. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step out of Kyoto with an excursion to Osaka Shiritsu Toyo Toji Museum in Osaka--about 1h 5 min away. There's lots more to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle, take a stroll through Gion, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji.
