Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
On the 2nd (Wed), browse the range of quality goods at Ginza Mitsukoshi, then stop by Ginza Itoya Hontren, then take a stroll through Ginza, and finally wander the streets of Odaiba District. On the next day, take a stroll through Kichijoji, wander the streets of Shimokitazawa, wander the streets of Kagurazaka, then take a stroll through Ueno District, then make a trip to Kappabashi Street (Kappabashi Dogugai), and finally wander the streets of Yanaka District.

Explore hidden gems such as Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Tempozan Ferris Wheel. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Dotombori District and Minami (Namba). Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Osaka: Arima Onsen (in Kobe) and Kiyomizu-dera Temple (in Kyoto). There's still lots to do: shop like a local with Hankyu Umeda Honten, let your taste buds guide you at a local gastronomic tour, get in on the family fun at Universal Studios Japan, and get your game on at Sunset Owl Cafe.

A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.
Kick off your visit on the 7th (Mon): kick back and relax at Nagata Inakahama, get outside with Isso Beach, and then take in the dramatic scenery at Janokuchinotaki Falls. Keep things going the next day: explore the striking landscape of Yakusugi Land, take in the awesome beauty at Tachudake, and then soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens.

You can do a combination of flight and taxi from Osaka to Yakushima-cho in 4.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of flight, ferry, and taxi; or do a combination of train, ferry, and taxi. In December, Yakushima-cho is a bit warmer than Osaka - with highs of 18°C and lows of 12°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Tue) to allow time to travel to Takachiho-cho.

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.
Start off your visit on the 9th (Wed): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Takachiho Shrine, take in breathtaking views at Takachiho Gorge, identify plant and animal life at Tokubetsuto Rice Terraces, then look for gifts at Michi-no-Eki Asobonosato Kugino, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Amano Iwato Shrine. On the 10th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: appreciate the views at Fujigawachi Valley, steep yourself in history at Kushifuru Shrine, then admire the sheer force of Manai Falls, and finally go for a walk through Amano Yasugawara.

Do a combination of taxi, flight, and train from Yakushima-cho to Takachiho-cho in 7.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of taxi, flight, and bus. Traveling from Yakushima-cho in December, things will get little chillier in Takachiho-cho: highs are around 12°C and lows about 3°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 10th (Thu) so you can travel to Ishigaki.

Start off your visit on the 11th (Fri): take in the awesome beauty at Nosoko Mape, then explore the gorgeous colors at Kabira Ishizaki Manta Scramble, then explore the activities along Kabira Bay, and finally stop by Yurateiku Market. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: get outside with Kondoi Beach, then enjoy the sand and surf at Yonehara Beach, then enjoy breathtaking views from Tamatorizaki Observatory, and finally visit a coastal fixture at Cape Hirakubozaki.

Traveling by combination of bus and flight from Takachiho-cho to Ishigaki takes 7 hours. Traveling from Takachiho-cho in December, expect Ishigaki to be much warmer, temps between 26°C and 20°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 12th (Sat) early enough to catch the ferry to Iriomote-jima.
