Miyakojima
A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Kick off your visit on the 8th (Mon): kick back and relax at Nagamahama Beach Coast, examine the collection at Yukishio Museum, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Miyako Shrine, and finally explore the gorgeous colors at Yabiji. On your second day here, see the interesting displays at Miyakojima City Museum, then paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour, then enjoy the sand and surf at Tomori Imugya Beach, and finally examine the collection at Underground Dam Museum.

Portland, USA to Miyakojima is an approximately 18-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 17 hours traveling from Portland to Miyakojima. Expect somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Portland in June: highs in Miyakojima hover around 87°F, while lows dip to 79°F. Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
On the 12th (Fri), paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour and then Head underground at Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave. The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Tenryuji Temple and Toji. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Getting from Yakushima-cho to Kyoto by combination of taxi, flight, and bus takes about 5 hours. Other options: do a combination of taxi, ferry, and train; or do a combination of taxi, ferry, bus, and train. In June in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 81°F during the day and 67°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel back home.
