With Atami's relative proximity to the nation's capital, this beach resort town draws its fair share of visitors--though holidays in Atami are not just a matter of convenience.
Start off your visit on the 18th (Fri): explore the historical opulence of Odawara Castle, don't miss a visit to Kiunkaku, and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinomiya Shrine. Here are some ideas for day two: admire the natural beauty at Akao Herb and Rose Garden, enjoy the sand and surf at Atami Sun Beach, then look for gifts at Tokiwagi Yohkanten Sohonten, then snap pictures at Mishima Skywalk, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Mishima Taisha.

Not too far from the capital, Ito has developed a reputation as a resort town, with a fair portion of its area lying within a national park.
Kick off your visit on the 20th (Sun): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Jingi Taisha Shrine, examine the collection at Izu Glass and Craft Museum, learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Izu Shaboten Zoo, then see the interesting displays at Ikeda museum of 20th century art, and finally take in the waterfront at Michi-no-Eki Ito Marine Town. Keep things going the next day: take in the views from Jogasaki Suspension Bridge, trek along Jogasaki Coast, let the kids burn off some steam at Izu Granpal Park, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Omuro, then visit Omuro Mountain Lift, and finally take in nature's colorful creations at Sakura no Sato.

Ito is just a short distance from Atami. Expect somewhat warmer temperatures when traveling from Atami in September; daily highs in Ito reach 78°F and lows reach 73°F. You'll have a few hours on the 22nd (Tue) to wrap things up before traveling to Kawazu-cho.

Kick off your visit on the 22nd (Tue): appreciate the history behind Izu no Odoriko Bungakuhi, take in the dramatic scenery at Kawazu Nanadaru Waterfalls, then snap pictures at Kawazu Nanadaru Loop Bridge, and finally examine the collection at Izu Naranda no Sato Kawazu Heian Buddha Statue Pavilion. On the 30th (Wed), explore the world behind art at The Hakone Open-Air Museum and then go for a walk through Cedar Trees of Hakone Old Road. You can do a combination of bus and train from Hakone-machi to Tokyo in 1.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Mon) to allow enough time to travel back home.
