The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Explore hidden gems such as Tenryuji Temple and Nanzen-ji Temple. Your inner history buff will appreciate Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Nara (Nara Park, Nigatsu-do Temple, & more). The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Popular historic sites such as Himeji Castle and Gin no Basha Michi are in your itinerary. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Keino Matsubara Beach and Matogata Beach. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Himeji: Katashibo Bamboo Forest (in Tatsuno) and Ritsuun Gorge (in Asago). Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Hiromine Shrine, trek along Mt Shosha hiking, and contemplate the long history of Aga Shrine.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Himeji in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In September in Himeji, expect temperatures between 31°C during the day and 26°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Thu) to allow enough time to take a train to Hiroshima.
