The smallest of Australia’s state capitals, Darwin has nevertheless become an attractive and important urban center, being simultaneously one of the country’s most modernized cities and a gateway to both the Top End region and South East Asia.
Escape the urban bustle at Nature & Wildlife Tours and Mindil Beach. Your inner history buff will appreciate Adelaide River War Cemetery and Christ Church Cathedral Darwin. Get out of town with these interesting Darwin side-trips: Adelaide River Railway Museum (in Adelaide River), Batchelor (Litchfield National Park, Batchelor Museum, & more) and Territory Wildlife Park (in Berry Springs). Spend the 8th (Mon) on the water with a fishing tour. Plan for a day of cool, family-friendly fun on the 13th (Sat) at Darwin Waterfront. There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, race across the water with a speed boat tour, get engrossed in the history at Darwin Aviation Museum, and look for all kinds of wild species at East Point Reserve.

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
You'll get in some beach time at Four Mile Beach and Wonga Beach. Get outdoors at Nature & Wildlife Tours and Scuba & Snorkeling. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: The Bat Hospital Visitor Centre (in Atherton), The Afghanistan Avenue of Honour (in Yungaburra) and Historic Village Herberton (in Herberton). Spend the 16th (Tue) spotting exotic species with a safari tour. Spend the 22nd (Mon) exploring nature at Daintree National Park. There's still lots to do: relax in the rural setting at Hartley's Crocodile Adventures, enjoy the sand and surf at Thornton Beach, stroll through Palm Cove Beach, and identify plant and animal life at Daintree Discovery Centre.

You can fly from Darwin to Cairns in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Expect a bit cooler weather when traveling from Darwin in July: highs in Cairns hover around 30°C, while lows dip to 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 30th (Tue) so you can travel back home.
