The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
On the 8th (Fri), admire the natural beauty at Nanzen-ji Temple, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and then contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Here are some ideas for day two: take a stroll through Gion, then step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
On the 10th (Sun), enjoy the sand and surf at Aragusuku Beach, step off the mainland to explore Shimojiiima Island, then kick back and relax at Toguchi no Hama, then take in the views from Irabu Ohashi, and finally explore the gorgeous colors at Yabiji. Here are some ideas for day two: get a new perspective on things with Boat Tours & Water Sports, then kick back and relax at Yonaha Maehama Beach, then add some adventure to your tour with a kayaking and canoeing tour, and finally head outdoors with Sunayama Beach.

Traveling by combination of train and flight from Kyoto to Miyakojima takes 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or do a combination of bus and flight. Expect somewhat warmer evenings in Miyakojima when traveling from Kyoto in May, with lows around 27°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Mon) to allow enough time to travel to Ishigaki.
