Admire the peculiar multilayered architecture of Samanid Mausoleum, a landmark shrine. Built in the 9th century, the mausoleum was envisaged as a family crypt for Isma'il ibn Ahmad Samani, who embraced Islam and established the Samanid dynasty, breaking off from the Abbasid Caliphate. A perfect baked-brick cube covered with a dome, the mausoleum is elaborately ornamented with various geometric shapes on the interior, featuring some characteristic Zoroastrian elements from Sogdian and Sasanian traditions. Located next to a manmade pond, the building houses the simple brick tomb of Isma'il Samani. Our Bukhara trip planner makes visiting Samanid Mausoleum and other Bukhara attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.
